Each week were going to look at different key elements of a Man’s Journey – Starting in week 1 with asking and answering the question ‘Who am I?’ I’m going to be encouraging you to ask and answer - The question of your own identity

In week 2 we’ll ask and seek to answer the question; ‘Where do I fit?’ Which career path suits my distinct skill set, my individual gifting? What kind of relationships should I build both intimately and socially? How will I build a life for me that has meaning to me?

Week 3 we’ll get into survival.

As you can see by now, in this process of establishing our unique identity and coming to our own conclusions we’ve well and truly upset the status quo and toppled the apple cart,

What is your idea of a man? Your response - if sufficiently mined - will in fact vary considerably from the response of your contemporaries, your wider circle, your fellow country folk and invariably the many peoples of the world.

It will vary based on what you uniquely bring to the table; your distinct characteristic’s - both surficial and way beneath the surface; it will be influenced by weather you are male, female, black or white, gay or straight or one of the many individuals who straddle these poles embodying within themselves more complex identification parameters.

Therefore when contemplating The Idea of a Man we have a rich reservoir from which to draw. This blog is concerned with the philosophical elements of manhood in their various expressions focusing predominantly upon the life and times of one man (me) and my experiences and subsequent musings, and the resultant broader concepts of manhood and manliness, with its various expectations, limitations, stagnations, evolutions, interpretations and implications.

This blog is not a moral comment on the state of manliness or a box in which to imprison the idea of manliness...

The Idea of a Man

Eating really healthy lately

Book Gold Mine

…I’m staring out my window loving the bits of nature I can see. The sky mainly, I love that even in a really built up metropolis generally at least when outdoors you can see the sky and each day you’re rewarded with a blank canvas that the universe keeps painting exploring the many possibilities, the various opportunities to splash light through cloud in the kaleidoscope of an ever changing drama.

Amazingly I no longer live in the city; I moved to a place my soul could call home, I remember not long after I moved in four or more years ago now, standing by the front door looking out and saying I could stay here.

On a cloudless night I get to see a full complement of stars staring down at me, I had a sensation during a week where I felt particularly ‘connected’, a deep sense of the closeness of it all, and how much I am a part of it, and the energy that permeates it operates likewise within the complexity that is me.

I’m home now after a long commute and a good days work trying to get the kids to do the cooking, with four kids week days (my wife cooking one day a week) I could come home to a cooked meal every night. Wow…

So I prefer to read books generally speaking, because the baddies always loose and the goodies always win in the end, or at least in the thriller type books I indulge in from time to time, not trash of course, I’m always after something literary, something with prose. As a writer myself I realise a good book is literally like a work of art. Writing is like painting with words. So if I start reading and it’s just vitriol I don’t get into it, I mean not all thrillers I read are literature some I put into that category, ‘God is a bullet’, ‘I Am Pilgrim’, but I also read a lot of Fredrick Forsyth and Robert Ludlum or the Ludlum ‘Covert One’ spin off things and there not literature but they’re good and you can learn some stuff. Oh yea I’d call Child 44, and The Secret Speech and Agent 6 literature. I mean that Kat can write, actually he’s a mate of mine; Tom Rob Smith we used to hang out in the same school where I met my wife 22-3 years ago. What a surprise that was, I find his book in my main book gold mine can you imagine. Across the road from where I live in the country is an old school which has been taken over by MenCap a charity its essentially like a charity furniture treasure trove, some bits of furniture and useful household stuff have been retrieved from it, however I digress, they do 5 books for a £1 yea five for a £1.

Poor Alice! It was as much as she could do, lying down on one side, to look tI feel like a proud mother who is beaming from ear to ear as I watch my child perform on stage for the first time! I'm so proud of my clients and all they have achieved. They believed in them selves enough to push through and past their fear and embraced the journey of creating their dream business.

Where Do I Fit?

This brings me back to…

…a statement you may have picked up on earlier in this blog were the words; “complex identification parameters.” We’ll you may have guessed by now or you may not have that I am one such individual who straddles within myself more complex identification parameters – racially I mean or should I say ‘racially in fact?’ (I don’t know!). I’m one of those people who are very proud to be quite ethnically diverse.  I wasn’t always – proud I mean, I wasn’t always able to recognise the tremendous asset my genetic makeup was to me personally, I mean just on a personal level, I can actually draw up from my own soul empathy and appreciation as well as insight and perspective on racial issues on a level many folks just can’t. Well let’s get down to business who am I. I’m speaking about this now as a prelude to somethings I’m going to say concerning the direction some of my study and reading is beginning to go in. We are living in interesting times and this being the information age is no time to remain in ignorance.

My mother is Caribbean and my father is a Welsh man. My mum was born in the beautiful West Indian Island of St. Vincent, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the Grenadines being 100 tiny Islands that span between St. Vincent and Grenada...

Complex identification parameters

Adolescent Cultural identification

During my adolescents I started off in fact with Gospel Rap. My parents took me to the CLC book shop in St. Pauls and I got (on cassette) – Michael Peace and DC Talk to start out with!!

On a further visit I graduated to what could actually be classified as Gospel Hip-hop with SFC, Dynamic Twins and PID, if you even have a clue what I’m waffling on about you’ll know these Kats from a Hip-hop perspective were not too shabby, in fact they were quite good.

I was in London at the time and my family had moved into my Grandma’s property after she passed away. Amongst her things I discovered Fredrick Forsyth for the first time, Sherlock Holmes and Tintin. So many hours were spend listening to those Gospel Hip-Hop tapes and reading Tintin that years later when I heard some such music played, I was transported to the mountains, foreign lands, caves and haunts of Tintin’ comic’s Oh and Asterix of course let’s not forget some Asterix was thrown into the mix.

Leaving Home

At 17 years old I left home; I had been attending college doing Art A-Level and was finding it really hard to concentrate, I’d turn up for class each day then as soon as the tutor turned his back or went to make himself a cup of tea I’d bolt out the door and not come back.

I spent those lonely days walking around a local grave yard depressed as hell trying to figure out the meaning of life. I don’t know what I was expecting to discover but I remember I kept staring at my hands, conscious that if I was physically here then I was certainly real and therefore my experience as a living breathing human being was real, even though sometimes life felt so surreal and abstract.

I am by temperament introvert, in those days however I really hadn’t developed any social skills and saw myself, and therefore projected myself very much as a shy person in the world. Introvert certainly doesn’t necessarily mean shy, shy is something different, something more. I wouldn’t say I was the shyest person on the planet but I was pretty nervous around people and really didn’t have much to contribute, a lot of this stemmed from my early days in the North of England where I was picked on and ostracised for being black.

Poor Alice! It was as much as she could do, lying down on one side, to

Turning 40 next year

I’ll be 40 next birthday, and that’s not far away now in fact a couple of months, I’m going to be honest It feels like a landmark that requires serious consideration.

The Journey of this man is requiring some serious overhauling. I have been saying for a while that you need to ask and answer the question; ‘what do you want?’ then assess where you are and devise a road map to where you’re going and ascertain how you’re going to get from A to B.

The key areas I feel requiring attention are health, wealth and relationships.  I have more of a pouch that I’m happy with, and certainly don’t have the physique I dreamed of when I was a teenager. The wealth issue is one of ongoing concern.  I’ve been married for 20 years and I must admit some more money and an improved physique can’t be the worst thing for improving martial relations. Shit!! Since I wrote the words above and at the time I’m typing these words I have crossed the bridge and entered my 40th year on earth, yea, I know I want to be writing every day, but life. In fact my 9 -5 has increased its hours for Christmas which may help the bank balance over Christmas but has been paid for in time and energy.

Make life worth living

In week 4 we’ll be looking at recreation, because all work and no play makes jack a dull boy. And we’ll also explore meaningful recreation, recreation that is an investment into your vocation. As well as the bona fide activity of simply - goofing off.

We’ll tackle important mind-sets that need to be adopted in order to succeed and mind-sets we need to lose

In week 6 we get into the prickly issue of Finance.

We’ll ascertain how to evaluate our finances, and we’ll don gloves to tackle the area of debt!  Work gloves to start breaking ceilings that want to limit our financial potential.

Seeking to address the crisis we see in the lives of men, Omar Zac Phillips begins this discourse by tackling the issue of identity and goes to the core;

- If in fact we are divine how should we then live?

- What does it look like to live our lives with the dignity and responsibility that this perspective gives us?

The perspective Omar brings is insightful and motivational and lays a foundation for future discourse where we'll get in to practical matters such as relationships and finance etc.

For now let's get clear on who we are and answer the question; 'What did you come as?'in the lives of men,

FRIENDSHIP

In week 7 we’ll look at friendship and ask what Is a friend – to a man!

Is it possible there are differences between male and female friendship, and what men want out of a friend?

LIFE PARTNERS

In week 8 we’ll explore the area of life partnership. Marriages, lovers, girl and boy friends. We’ll explore common issues experienced by us all. The need to re-ignite passion, because love is never going to work as a simply intellectual exercise.

FAMILY

Then we’ll look in week 9 at the family. Your current situation might not be that great, there are mixed and blended, separated and ended family settings. Or perhaps you feel you’re happily flying on all cylinders.

SPIRITUALITY

By Week 10 we’ll be getting into double digits. So let’s switch gears as were getting into these higher numbers, let’s tackle the lofty matter of a man’s spirituality.

Practical Spirituality of course!

MIND & HEART

In Week 11 we enter the area of mind and heart. This is about how to invest in the other apparently ethereal area of our lives our souls.

We are each of us triune entities. Identities made up of three parts. We are Spirits, Souls and Bodies.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Then we’ll conclude with week 12, and here you’ve guessed it we get into the third component of the trinity that makes up us; The Body!!
